  • NRG Stadium, Houston – USA

Why this match matters

Germany, by all standards, should be able to top this Group E that also has Ivory Coast and Ecuador. But they come with pressure as they have failed to leave the groups since their triumph in Brazil at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Those two shocking exits will define the context in which Julian Nagelsmann’s squad arrives in the Americas, and it should expect a large crowd at NRG Stadium in Houston.

Curacao continue with their fairytale as an island nation of just 150,000 people becomes the smallest by population ever to qualify for a FIFA World Cup. And they didn’t just arrive here by chance; they qualified for the North America tournament after going unbeaten throughout the entire CONCACAF campaign. Basically, they were unbeaten in all their six Final Round group matches with a squad constructed mainly around Dutch-Curacaoan diaspora players largely based in the Netherlands and in other parts of Europe.

Unlike the small nation, their coach Dick Advocaat is not new to the World Cup, having led the Netherlands at USA 1994 and then South Korea at Germany 2006 and is leading a country full of belief. But against Germany, the odds are rightly against them. The Germans are ranked tenth in the latest April FIFA Rankings, and playing against a team ranked 82nd, they have no room for sentiment. Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala are some of the most technically gifted players in this squad and carry a lot of weight on their shoulders.

Germany came through the qualifiers as winners of their group that had Slovakia, Luxembourg and Northern Ireland. They cruised with five wins from six matches and only lost to Slovakia 2-0, a team that they demolished 6-0 on their return. While Curacao are debuting, they face a machine that has made 21 appearances at the FIFA World Cup and is on its 19th consecutive appearance this year.

Key trends from recent matches

Curacao have struggled to do any meaningful preparations, and from the few internationals they have played, their naivety has been exposed greatly. While they beat a little-known Aruba, they have lost heavily 4-1 to Scotland and 5-1 to Australia, while back in March, they lost 2-0 to China. Besides the 4-0 win over Aruba, they have managed to score only two in four matches, but have conceded a whopping 11 in just three matches. This exposes them on all fronts as a poor team defensively and also blunt upfront.
