Why Ghana vs Panama match matters

Group L at the 2026 World Cup is the definition of a group with a clear hierarchy. England and Croatia are the established European powers who occupy the top positions on paper. Below them sit Ghana and Panama, two nations whose realistic ambition begins and ends with this fixture. Both teams know that England are likely to win the group and Croatia to compete strongly for second place. Which means the game in Toronto on June 17 is, in practical terms, the game that decides which of these two sides has any realistic hope of extending their tournament beyond the group stage.

The Ghana FA made the hard decision to sack coach Otto Addo who guided them to their fifth FIFA World Cup 72 days to this summer’s finals. The coach razed through their Group I of the CAF qualifiers winning eight, drawing one and losing only one of their ten matches but a double-defeat to Austria 5-1 and Germany 2-1 in their pre-tournament friendly in March was the stroke that broke the camel’s back.  Otto’s was replaced by 73-year-old Portuguese manager Carlos Queiroz who is the most experienced coach at the tournament having been at the FIFA World Cup five times and heading for his sixth. Queiroz has guided South Africa at the 2002, Portugal in 2010 and Iran three times at the Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 and Qatar in 2022.now it remains to be seen what he has implemented in the squad for the nine weeks he has been in charge.

READ – World Cup Outright Predictions

Their opponent Panama arrives in their North America neighborhood with different, quieter stakes as they return to the FIFA World cup for only their second time after debuting in Russia 2018. They are yet to win a single match at the World Cup after suffering defats in all their three previous matches where they conceded 11 goals.

That is the record Thomas Christiansen’s side desperately wants to change, and Ghana, disrupted by managerial change and missing their star player, represents the most realistic opportunity in this group to do exactly that.

Key trends from Ghana’s recent matches

Ghana has failed to win any of their last six games, losing five and one draw against Wales a fortnight ago in their last friendly match before the World Cup. The Black Stars have been very poor scoring only three goals in their last five matches and conceded 11 including that 5-1 loss to Austria and 2-1 to Germany that cost Addo’s job. They’re struggling to score the goals as well as keeping their goal safe.

Key trends from Panama’s recent matches

Panama has registered mixed results in their last five games winning two, drawing two and losing two. They lost heavily 6-2 to Brazil beat Dominican Republic 4-2 and drew 1-all with Bosnia & Herzegovina in their final preparations. They have been efficient scoring 10 goals, at least a goal in every game but their defense has let them down conceding at least a goal in each of the five last games. On average, they have conceded two goals per game.

Ghana team news

Mohammed Kudus is definitely Ghana’s most gifted attacker presently and is that man whose goal sealed their World Cup qualification but, unfortunately, he is ruled out of the entire tournament with injury. Alexander Djiku who suffered a hamstring and Mohammed Salisu with an ACL injury will not be present in the USA, Mexico and Canada. Midfielder Thomas Partey has been barred from entering Canada over an ongoing case in Europe and will therefore miss this game.

These four absences remove quality from every department of the team but the return of Leicester City’s Abdul Fatawu Issahaku has recovered from his own ACL injury and is included in the squad as a game-changing option from the bench.

Carlos Queiroz’s early work has produced a 1-1 draw with Wales and a 2-0 defeat against Mexico in the only friendly matches he has been in charge. Those results clearly don’t provide any comfort but at least, for him, it confirms that the squad is capable of competing without completely collapsing.

Panama team news

Panama’s history hunt: Panama return as a much more experienced and tactically developed side that believes this is the tournament where that record changes after losing to Belgium, England and Tunisia in their debut in 2018.

Panama qualified from CONCACAF by topping their final round group with three wins and three draws from six matches, scoring nine goals and conceding four. Their most recent five confirmed results show a team that wins more than it loses but is not impervious to dropping points against even modest opposition, drawing with Suriname in qualifying when a win was available.

The side coached by Christiansen’s side rely heavily on Columbus Crew’s forward Jose Fajardo for goals. Fajardo has scored 17 international goals in which three of them came in their qualifying phase. Their right back Amir Murillo who features for Sporting CP in Portugal is ranked as their most technically accomplished player who contributed three assists in their qualification run their goalkeeper Luis Mejia is experienced, with about 60 caps but will be tested enough by Ghana’s wide attacking players.
