Why France vs Morocco match matters
Revenge will feature prominently on the agenda as France hosts Morocco in what should ideally be an explosive and one of the most anticipated quarterfinal matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Morocco made history four years ago in Qatar when they became the first African nation ever to reach the semifinal but their fairytale run was painfully halted by a polished French team. Theo Hernandez and Kolo Muani scored at the beginning and end of the match as the French progressed to a back-to-back final for the first time. Morocco comes into this fight not as the surprise underdogs riding a fairytale but as a battle-hardened side that has grown into a proper contender, not just a dark horse.
France firing on all cylinders
Now this French team looks every inch a title contender after shedding off a couple of older players and building the team around the attacking quality of their captain, Kylian Mbappe.
The Moroccans are a much more resolute and well-built machine that reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations earlier in the year and have muscled out some top nations to reach this level.
France has won all five matches at this World Cup, but it has not been all rosy. The two-time champions had to bank on the brilliance and genius of Mbappe to break down a resilient Senegal side that had held them for 66 minutes before scoring a brace, with Bradley Barcola adding to the 3-1 victory. Another Mbappe double saw them thrash Iraq 3-0 before a statement 4-1 victory over Norway with Ousmane Dembele bagging a hat trick.
Morocco’s defensive steel faces its biggest test
Mbappé rose to the occasion with another double to guide them 3-0 past Sweden and then the sole penalty as they overcame a defensive Paraguay in the 70th minute.
Morocco has built their current fortunes on a defensive foundation built on the same principles that pushed them in Qatar. The Atlas Lions bank heavily on the individual brilliance of their captain, Hakimi. His runs from the right wing-back have troubled opponents, with Azzedine Ounahi playing a key role in making good use of the chances. Canada had earlier caused panic in the Moroccan defence with quick runs but Ounahi capitalised on a well-taken free-kick and then a curling finish from a similar position to double the lead. Razihimi Diaz closed the result and ensured Morocco edged out Canada to reach here. They had to thank their goalkeeper Yassine Bounou’s heroics to oust the Netherlands 3-2 in a penalty shootout that followed a 1-1 draw in the Round of 32.
They emerged from Group C joint on seven points with Brazil after cancelling each other in the opening match that Morocco largely controlled, and then won over Scotland and Haiti.

France team news
Didier Deschamps returned to the dugout after the burial of his mum in their win over Paraguay. The 1998 and 2018 World Cups have a fully-fit squad to select, even though he might have to manage the aspect of fatigue that comes with intense battles, especially the hard-fought victory over Paraguay over the weekend.
Key French players to watch
French captain Kylian Mbappe is in the battle for the Golden Boot after scoring the lone winner from the spot against Paraguay to take his tally to seven goals. Mbappe also holds the record for the most knockout stage goals scored with 12 to his name. he is the joint leading scorer at this tournament with Argentine legend Leo Messi, Erling Haaland and England captain Harry Kane.
Ousmane Dembele has shared the burden of goals with four to his name at this tournament, including a hat trick in the group stage fixture against Norway. While they have been scoring the goals, one cannot underestimate the efforts of Bayern Munich star Michael Olise, who has now provided five assists and is just one short of hitting the World Cup assists record. His movement, creativity and pace will be key in unlocking this Moroccan backline.
Morocco team news
Moroccan coach Mohamed Ouahbi has a fully fit team with his strongest starting team intact. The coach may only have to manage the fitness level of his players, whose energy was sapped after the gruelling Round of 32 with the Netherlands, which they won on penalties. The fatigue could be evidently seen from their win over Canada.
Key Moroccan players to watch
Achraf Hakimi has already contributed three goals by scoring one and providing two assists. He will be crucial in opening an alternative channel down the right from his right back into the dangerous positions. Azzedine Ounahi scored a brace against Canada to fit into the boots of Isamaili Saibiari, who failed to score despite scoring in all three games in the group stages as well as the winning penalty in their shootout win over the Netherlands.
