Why A France vs Spain match matters
A France vs Spain at any point of the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup before the final can be rightfully regarded as the final before the final. And for this fixture to appear in the semifinal becomes the match of the semifinal, putting in mind that the two were the outright bets for the teams to go all the way to win the title, but unfortunately, one has to go after this stage. Spain’s head coach Luis De La Fuente mentioned in his pre-match presser that, indeed, “it is not an exaggeration to describe this match as a final before the final”.
This is the first World Cup semi-final in the history of the tournament where the top four FIFA-ranked teams reach the final four. France comes into this match as the odds-on favourites with Gals Sports Betting Uganda pricing them at odds 2.40 to win, as Spain come as underdogs with 3.20. It is not a miscalculation, as France is the only side among those remaining that has won all their matches without needing the penalty shootout lotteries. They have won all their six matches, and there’s no match where they looked shaky.
Frightening French front three
Their 2-0 victory in the quarterfinal against Morocco, in what was largely touted as a rematch of the Qatar 2022 final, was more of a routine victory with their lead forwards Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele each finding their scoring boots. After that match, Morocco’s head coach Mohamed Ouahbi described the French front three that comprises Mbappe, Dembele and Michael Olise as ‘frightening’ and indeed, numbers just prove that.
Kylian Mbappe has scored eight goals and is the joint lead topscorer of the tournament with Argentina’s Lionel Messi. On top of that, he has assisted three goals. Ousmane Dembele has contributed to seven goals, scoring five and assisting two more, while Michael Olise has not got on the scoresheet yet but has contributed six assists.
Mbappe and Olise are chasing history as top scorer and, for the latter, have one more assist to match the decades-long-standing assist record of seven set by Brazilian legend Pele.

Spanish flair
On the other side, Spain’s route has defined them. Five of their six victories, bar for their 4-0 thrashing of Saudi Arabia, have been by a margin of just a single goal. Two of those winners have been grabbed in the last five minutes of normal time, including that Mikel Merino header that won them their tie against Portugal and ended Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup hopes.
The Arsenal forward also netted the winner in the 88th minute in their hard-fought 2-1 win over Belgium to reach this stage after De Ketelare had cancelled out Fabian Ruiz’s opener.
Youngster Lamine Yamal has not performed to the expectations of the crowds and will be up against a Mbappe who won the World Cup as a teenager in 2018 and won the golden boot as well.
If Spain can replicate the compact defensive discipline that limited Belgium and Portugal to isolated chances, this becomes exactly the kind of tight, single-goal contest their recent record against France suggests is likely.

France team news
Real Madrid defender Aurelien Tchouameni is managing an injury that has been nagging through the knockout rounds, but the French team will be satisfied, at least, that there is no other concern in the squad.
Key French players to watch
Kylian Mbappe is leading a terrific French front-three that is capable of demolishing opposition lines with devastating effect. With eight goals in six matches, Mbappe has scored 20 World Cup goals and is chasing Messi for the record. Messi has scored 21. Dembele has contributed directly to seven goals, scoring five and assisting two, while Michael Olise is the engine of their attack with unmatched capability to break down defences and find his attacking duo even in tight spaces.
Desire Doue and Bradley Barcola have contributed five goals, with Doue scoring one and assisting another while Barcola has netted twice. The duo offer more options in attack in case the leading front three are marked.
Spanish team news
There are no confirmed injury reports from the Spanish team ahead of this semifinal match, leaving the coach Luis De La Fuente with a full selection. His only concern will be how to manage his squad, with fatigue definitely a factor at this level.
Key Spanish players to watch
Mikel Oyarzabal is Spain’s biggest attacking threat and outlet after scoring four goals and assisting another. Lamine Yamal has not been up to what was expected of him but remains the team’s best talent that could rise at any given moment to win a match. Mikel Merino has been Spain’s unlikely hero, coming from the bench to offer more options with two winners in their last two games against Portugal and Belgium.
