Why Brazil vs Norway match matters

Brazil and Norway have met quite a few times in either competitive or international friendly matches but ironically, the five-time world champions have never won a single match. While Brazil came into this tournament as one of the top three outright favourites, they have mysteriously managed to lie low with most of the media coverage diverted to the presence or lack of it of their star Neymar Junior. Perhaps this was a masterstroke by coach Carlo Ancelotti to reduce the pressure on himself and his star Vinicius Junior.

The only World Cup fixture featuring these two was a group stage match in 1998, where the Europeans shocked Brazil with a 2-1 win as the Brazilians went on to reach the final. In that match, Norway came from behind after Bebeto had grabbed the lead in the 78th minute. Though it was a final group game after Brazil had already qualified.

As stated, Brazil have not looked entirely convincing in the favourites tag in their preliminary matches. They had to rely on a Vinicius Junior brilliant curler to share the spoils with Morocco in an opening game where they were overwhelmed for large parts of the game. They were more convincing against Haiti with a 3-0 win with Mathias Cunha’s double and another by Vinicius, but that’s not an opponent to measure a World Cup title contender. Vinicius again struck twice as they clipped Scotland 3-0 to finish the group on top.

If Morocco wasn’t a serious test, then their clash against Japan in the Round of 32 was definitely one. Casemiro and Martinelli netted deep in the second half as the Samba Boys came from a goal down to nick it in the last minute of added time.

Haaland and Norway believe

But if Brazil’s path was shaky, Norway arrived full of confidence with a golden generation capable of causing some shockers here and there. Norway shrugged off resistance from Ivory Coast to win 2-1 in the Round of 32 courtesy of Erling Haaland’s easy 86th-minute tap-in. Antonio Nusa had put them in the lead, but Amad Diallo equalised with 15 minutes left, but the Ivorians could not contain the gigantic striker.

Norway started with a statement 4-1 over Iraq with Haaland grabbing a first-half brace and then repeated the same as they overcame Senegal 3-2 to seal a place. Their 4-1 loss to France could be inconsequential in this preview as most of the key players had been rested for the knockouts.

These Brazilian defenders are not new to Haaland’s face. He has scored six goals against Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhaes in the English Premier League and three against Marquinhos at PSG. With five goals to his name and chasing Kylian Mbappe and Leo Messi on six for the Golden Boot, Haaland is more motivated for this fixture.

Brazil team news

Neymar has not started a game yet but is fully fit alongside youngster Endrick and could feature deep in this game as a substitute if the need arises.

Key Brazilian players to watch

Vinicius Junior scored in every group game and was the man of the match in all three games, but was unfortunate to hit the post twice against Japan. With four goals to his name, Vinicius is the biggest attacking threat in this Brazil team. Manchester United’s Mathius Cunha has three goals and an assist and offers another channel of goals for Brazil. There were doubts about Casemiro’s level of fitness to feature prominently in Brazil’s midfield but his performance and goal against Japan proved that he has the batteries to handle the midfield and push forward.

While Brazil’s attacking threat is crucial, their backline, commanded by Alisson in goal, has kept two clean sheets in four matches and remains key to their campaign.

Norway team news

Norway has no injury or suspensions and their coach Stale Solbakken has a fully fit squad to pick from.

Key Norway players to watch

It is hard to look at any player in the Norwegian squad without looking at their giant striker, Erling Haaland. He scored a brace on his World Cup debut against Iraq and followed with a similar performance against Senegal to seal promotion. He also scored the winner in the Round of 32 and now has five goals in the three games he has played. Martin Odegaard is their captain and main creative mind from the midfield and during set-pieces. The Arsenal captain has not scored a goal yet but has created three assists that just underline how important he is in the build-up play.

Antonio Nusa gave Norway the lead against Ivory Coast and, together with Alexander Sorloth, offers an alternative source of goals if Brazilian defenders overwhelm Haaland.
