Competition – FIFA World Cup 2026
Group L, Matchday 2: Tuesday, 23 June 2026
Kick-off – 11 pm
Venue – Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Boston
Why England vs Ghana match matters
If anyone doubted England’s credibility and intentions for this 2026 FIFA World Cup, then their commanding show against Croatia in that 4-2 victory should have cleared the air. Thomas Tuchel’s side were at their devastating best in the second-half with a quality bench that was as good as any starter.
The Three Lions now lead Group L with a +2-goal difference as Ghana follow closely in second courtesy of their unconvincing 1-0 win over Panama scored deep with the clock in the red. So, a victory for either England or Ghana in this penultimate group fixture will all but confirm a place in the Round of 32.
But despite that second-half commanding victory, England’s win over Croatia delivered everything except calm. Tuchel’s side led twice through a retaken Harry Kane penalty and a towering header from Declan Rice’s corner, only to be pegged back twice by Martin Baturina’s venomous strike and Petar Musa’s clever volley, the latter arriving in first-half stoppage time after England switched off defensively. The match turned decisively in the second half, when Jude Bellingham restored England’s lead just two minutes after the restart and Marcus Rashford added gloss late on, completing a 4-2 win. The result extended England’s habit of winning their opening World Cup fixture for the third tournament running but the defensive uncertainty around John Stones and Ezri Konsa will concern Tuchel heading into Boston.

Ghana’s stoppage-time escape
Ghana’s opener against Panama was, by their own manager’s admission, won “with our brains” rather than control. Panama dominated the first half so completely that Ghana failed to register a single shot but Carlos Queiroz’s tactical patience paid off when substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante burst clear in the 95th minute and squared for Caleb Yirenkyi to force home the latest winning goal of the tournament so far. It was cruel on Panama, who remain winless in four World Cup appearances but it gave Ghana the perfect response to Mohammed Kudus’s absence just weeks before the tournament.
Both sides now arrive in Boston with three points and contrasting routes to get there.
England vs Ghana head-to-head record
These two nations have never met at the FIFA World Cup or any other competitive tournament but the last time they met in recent times was in March 2011 when they drew 1-1 in an international friendly match.
England’s recent form – W-W-W-L-D
England’s last five matches
- 17.06.2026 – England 4-2 Croatia
- 10.06.2026 – England 3-0 Costa Rica
- 06.06.2026 – England 1-0 New Zealand
- 31.03.2026 – England 0-1 Japan
- 27.03.2026 – England 1-1 Uruguay
Goals scored – 9
Goals conceded – 4
Key trends from recent matches
England had three different scorers and three assists for their four goals against Croatia. They have scored at least a goal in four of their last five matches. While they conceded only four goals in that streak, Croatia scored two goals inside ten minutes to expose the weak spots in the English wall. What is interesting from that match is that England scored from a corner kick, something that has been famous with Arsenal’s championship and could play a big role going forward. Harry Kane’s opening goal was also from a corner kick and the other from the spot.
Ghana’s recent form – W-D-L-L-L
Ghana’s last five matches
- 18.06.2026 – Ghana 1-0 Panama
- 02.06.2026 – Wales 1-1 Ghana
- 23.05.2026 – Mexico 2-0 Ghana
- 30.03.2026 – Germany 2-1 Ghana
- 27.03.2026 – Austria 5-1 Ghana
Goals scored – 4
Goals conceded – 10
Key trends from recent matches
While Ghana won their match against Panama, that is a lowly-ranked nation to base World Cup strength on. Before that match, they had lost three games and drawn against Wales. They have scored a paltry four goals in those five matches and conceded nine.
England team news
England did not register any injuries during the opener and also gave Bukayo Saka some quality time off the bench as he made it count with an assist to Marcus Rashford’s goal. However, his full involvement in this game is still doubtful.
Key players: England captain Harry Kane’s brace versus Croatia took him level with England great Gary Lineker on England’s all-time World Cup scoring list on ten goals. He should be able to clear within the two remaining group games. Jude Bellingham scored again after nearly a year and adds more attacking options, while Declan Rice, who created Kane’s second goal from a typical, yes, Arsenal-like corner, anchors the midfield. Marcus Rashford scored fifteen minutes after coming on as a 71st-minute substitute.
