Why this match matters

The 2026 FIFA World Cup opens exactly as the 2010 edition did, the first hosted on African soil. The fixture produced one of the most electric moments in World Cup history as dreadlocked Siphiwe Tshabalala’s pile-driver opened the tournament, giving South Africa the lead, and they will dream of something similar.

The Estadio Azteca becomes the first ground in history to host the opening match of three different men’s World Cups, having done so in 1970 and 1986. Still, the co-hosts, nicknamed El Tri, will seek to advance past the round of 16 after failing in their last seven consecutive tournaments, including in Qatar 2022.

They hope to be boosted by the fact that they are scheduled to play all three group games at home and could remain in front of their desperate fans for the round of 32 if they top Group A, which also has South Korea and the Czech Republic. This makes this opening fixture uniquely charged.

Coach Javier Aguirre led Mexico in this same fixture 16 years ago at the Soccer City in Johannesburg and has managed for three stints now and surely, no one better than him understands better what losing here would cost.

The Bafana Bafana are making a return to the FIFA World Cup after missing out since 2010, but their qualifying campaign was not that perfect, managing five wins and three draws from 10 matches in Group D of the African qualifiers after collecting 18 points. Hugo Broos’s Bafana Bafana arrive with belief but also with the clear-eyed knowledge that Group A, on paper, is not theirs to win. A point from this opener would be a significant statement, and anything more would be a sensation not only for them but also for the whole African continent and a boost to the rest of the nine representatives.

Key trends from recent matches

Mexico is going to the 2026 FIFA World Cup with its head up after going eight build-up games this year without a loss, winning six and drawing two. Their attack has been in form, scoring 15 goals in the eight games, an average of 1.9 per game but the frugality of their defence has won them games in tight encounters as they conceded only twice and kept six clean sheets.

Raúl Jiménez has been their greatest attacking weapon, as Santiago Giménez provided an important alternative after returning from injury. Critically, the altitude of Mexico City, which is approximately 2,250 metres above sea level, is a terrain Mexico’s players are intimately familiar with, a factor that wears down opponents over 90 minutes in ways that statistics alone cannot capture.

Mexico will miss their preferred first-choice custodian Luis Malagon after rupturing his Achilles tendon earlier in March.

Suspensions: None.

Key players to watch: Fulham’s striker Raúl Jiménez is their biggest threat and has scored 44 goals for the EL Tri and stands third in their all-time scorers. Their skipper, Edson Álvarez, who plays for Turkish side Fenerbahce, returned from an operation on his ankle and managed about an hour in their 1-0 win over Australia in a build-up.

South Africa team news

Key players to watch: Mamelodi Sundowns’ keeper Ronwen Williams, who is Bafana’s skipper, has grown into the nation’s most important player and a penalty specialist. Burnley’s Lyle Foster has scored ten international goals in 29 appearances.

Best betting markets for Mexico vs South Africa

Match winner – Mexico to win

Expect the high altitude to give Mexico an advantage, while their superior squad depth is another reason to back this bet.

Over/under goals – Under 2.5 goals

Both teams to score – no

Mexico’s defence has won them games in tight encounters as they conceded only twice and kept six clean sheets, while South Africa have scored only five in their last eight games, making this a tight contest.

Mexico’s mean defence has suppressed opponents all year. South Africa’s misfiring attack makes a clean sheet realistic for El Tri.

Anytime goal scorer – Raúl Jiménez

Jimenez is Mexico’s first-choice striker and the preferred penalty taker after scoring nine Premier League goals this season.
