Why Colombia vs Ghana match matters

Ghana carries the hopes of a continent that is eager to push more teams into the Round of 16 after Morocco became the first African country to advance back-to-back. However, those ambitions will be tested heavily by a Colombian side that arrives as favourites both on paper and in pedigree.

Colombia reached the quarterfinals of the Brazil 2014 and then the Round of 16 in Russia 2018 but failed to qualify for the last edition in Qatar. They are a better team at controlling games and are very efficient at the back. Their road to this stage saw them finish as Group K winners with an unbeaten record that collected seven points in a group that also had Portugal. Their opening match, a 3-1 victory over a lowly-ranked Uzbekistan, highlighted the options coach Nestor Lorenzo’s options in attack but also their struggles against organised defences after the Asians held them for 40 minutes. Crystal Palace forward Daniel Munoz opened the scoring in the 40^th but Uzbekistan found their way back at the hour interval. Then their persistent attacks paid off with Luis Diaz restoring the lead five minutes later before Leandro Campaz’s strike deep in added time ended the pressure. Munoz scored his second goal of the tournament to win it for Colombia in the 76^th minute against DR Congo before they held Portugal’s attack to a barren draw to finish top, conceding only one goal.

Colombia’s progress was largely built on patient possession and speculative long-range shooting in their build-ups, but now they come against a Ghanaian side that is exactly the opposite of that.

Mean Ghana counts their chances

The Black Stars came to the tournament as underdogs even in their own group but the third-place option played to their advantage. They had to rely on a stoppage-time strike by Caleb Yirenkyi to break off Panama’s resilience for their first win. Despite the win, their performance was below par compared to the pedigree of both sides at the World Cup. Their 0-0 draw against England was inspiring as they held off a deadly English attack led by Harry Kane but suffered a 2-1 victory over Croatia. Ranked 65^th in the recent FIFA Rankings, Ghana are among the lowest-rated teams remaining in this round.

The side coached by coached by Carlos Quieroz will rely heavily on Thomas Partey’s fitness and activity to screen out pockets of spaces in front of Ghana’s back-four that Colombia could exploit as they either try to shoot and wait for potential rebounds or that heir attacking trio of Luis Diaz, James Rodriguez and Richard Rios would try to exploit to enter the box.

Partey is the fulcrum of their midfield and is key in their defensive structure and should be crucial in disrupting Colombia’s build-up. Their captain Jordan Ayew has already racked up 120 appearances and will be key in controlling the game rather than scoring after failing to score a goal in the group stages. Semenyo, if fit, brings his directness as he coordinates with Abdul Fatawu in looking for goals. Their goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi has been crucial in their group games and has kept two clean sheets. He will be expected to produce the same as he faces a Colomban side that loves to shoot from distance.
