Why this Czechia vs South Africa match matters

Group A has already produced two of the more chaotic afternoons of the opening round, and both Czechia and South Africa left their first matches with nothing to show for it. This fixture in Atlanta is no longer a routine group-stage game between two unfancied sides.

Second matches at a tournament are very tricky, and this one is even tougher as both sides need to make good use of their opportunities, as Mexico and South Korea face each other elsewhere. We can tag this a “must-not-lose match” for both nations.

Bafana Bafana, despite facing an unfriendly atmosphere against their fellow Africans due to some cases of xenophobia, didn’t make matters easier for themselves in that chaotic opener against Mexico in Mexico City.

Julian Quinones put the hosts ahead just nine minutes into the game following Sphephelo Sithole’s schoolboy error that opened the chaotic night.

Sithole made it worse for a last-man foul shortly after the break before Raul Jimenez doubled Mexico’s lead in the 67th minute. Then, as South Africans tried to regain their footing and, at least, fight back, they were dealt another blow as substitute Themba Zwane was sent to the showers for violent conduct

Both Zwane and Sithole will miss this clash, forcing Hugo Broos to fidget with whatever remains as he finds solutions to cover their gaps.

Czechia’s story from the opener is more sympathetic, even if the outcome was the same. Miroslav Koubek’s side led South Korea for eight minutes through Ladislav Krejčí’s header from a Vladimír Coufal long throw, only for In-beom Hwang to level within minutes and substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu to complete a Korean comeback in the 80th minute. Czechia were, by most statistical measures, competitive for long stretches and unfortunate not to take something from the game. They arrive in Atlanta with confidence intact despite the defeat, while South Africa arrive with a squad in flux and a six-match winless run that now needs urgent repair.

Team news

Czechia team news – Czechia suffered no injuries in their opening loss to South Korea and has a clean bill of health.

Key players: Bayer Leverkusen’s Patrik Schick was quiet in that loss to South Korea but should pose a big threat to South Africa’s defence line. West Ham’s Ladislav Krejci is their skipper and led by example by scoring their consolation goal and should be crucial in this game, especially during set pieces.

South Africa team news – Both Themba Zwane and Sphephelo Sithole will not be available for selection since they’re serving suspensions after their red cards against Mexico. Sithole has left a gap and may force Hugo Broos to tweak his formation a bit. Zwane may not affect the Bafana Bafana so much since he was a substitute against Mexico.

Key players: their skipper, Ronwen Williams, remains their key player after producing some fine saves against Mexico, but his strike let him down. Burnley’s Lyle Foster will be counted for goals once more and is expected to be upfront alone as the coach tries to cover the Sithole gap.

South Africa vs Czech Republic head-to-head record stats

Dec 13, 1997 – South Africa 2-2 Czech Republic

These two sides have only met once in the FIFA Confederations Cup in 1997, where they drew 2-2. Beyond that statistic, there is no impactful data relevant to this analysis.

Czech Republic’s recent form – LWWWW

Czech Republic’s last five matches

June 12, 26 – South Korea 2-1 Czech Republic

June 2, 26 – Czech Republic 3-1 Guatemala

May 31, 26 – Czech Republic 2-1 Kosovo

March 31, 26 – Czech Republic 3-1 Denmark

March 26, 26 – Czech Republic 4-3 Ireland

Goals scored – 10

Goals conceded – 7

Key trends from recent matches

Czech Republic were unfortunate to lose a 60th-minute lead to go down 2-1 to a rampant South Korea in the opening game. Before the tournament, they were riding on a good form of four consecutive wins, during which they had scored at least two goals per game. The goal against Korea means they are capable of scoring against a South Africa, which was penetrated twice against Mexico. They have scored ten goals and conceded seven in five games, where they have let in at least a goal in all those matches.

South Africa’s recent form – LDDLD

South Africa’s last five matches

June 11, 26 – Mexico 2-0 South Africa

June 7, 26 – Jamaica 1-1 South Africa

May 29, 26 – South Africa 0-0 Nicaragua

Mar 31, 26 – South Africa 1-2 Panama

Mar 27, 26 – South Africa 1-1 Panama

Goals scored – 3

Goals conceded – 5

Key trends from recent matches

South Africa suffered a forgettable 2-0 loss in their opening game against co-hosts Mexico, a result that highlights their poor preparations, where they had not won a match in five outings that involved draws against Jamaica, Nicaragua and Panama and losses to Cameroon and Panama. What should worry Broos is that his side has done relatively well to keep their defence with only five goals conceded in five games, but has scored only three. He must find goals.
