Competition – FIFA World Cup 2026

Group I, Matchday 3 – Friday, June 26, 2026

Time – 10 pm

Venue – Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Boston

France leads on goal difference, +5, ahead of Norway on +4, with both tied on six points after two wins apiece. Senegal and Iraq are both eliminated on zero points. This match is a straight fight for Group I top spot with nothing more than a kinder knockout draw at stake, but pride at stake for both teams in Boston.

Group, I was billed as one of the Groups of Death before the tournament began, carrying the highest average FIFA ranking of any group at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Through two matchdays, it has lived up to that billing in quality if not in drama for the two leading sides. France beat Senegal 3-1 and hammered Iraq 3-0. Norway beat Iraq 4-1 and edged Senegal 3-2 in a rain-swept MetLife Stadium thriller that saw Haaland score twice just to become Norway’s all-time leading World Cup scorer. Both sides are through and therefore arrive in Boston with six points and maximum effort still available for 90 minutes.

The prize is the right to a theoretically easier round of 32, where the winner faces a third-placed team from group 3rd Group C/D/F/G/H. In a tournament of this quality, that distinction matters.

Deschamps’ farewell

France manager Didier Deschamps announced that this is his final year after leading France glory in Russia 2018 and a losing finalist in Qatar last time out.

Every match from this point is part of his farewell, and the motivation to send himself out at the top runs through every France training session in Boston.

What’s even emotional is that the 57-year-old coach will not be on the touchline for this fixture after the France Football Federation confirmed that he has briefly returned to France for the burial of his mother who passed away on Tuesday. His assistant Guy Stephan is in charge until the coach returns.

Haaland chases boot

While a lot has been talked about Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi breaking and setting new World Cup goals record, Erling Haaland has quietly crept into the race. The Manchester City giant has scored four, the same as Mbappe and are just one behind Messi who plays later on Saturday.

He has scored in his last 12 competitive international appearances. Only five other players in World Cup history have scored in each of their first two tournament appearances at a single edition. He is the sixth player to score two goals in each of his first two World Cup games, and only the second in 50 years alongside Harry Kane in 2018.

Norway team news

Julian Ryerson remains a doubt after picking an 11th-minute injury during the Senegal match. However, his replacement Marcus Pedersen was impactful, scoring the opening goal 20 minutes into his first World Cup appearance. Norway’s squad is otherwise intact.

Key players: Erling Haaland has four World Cup goals in the only two matches he has appeared at the World Cup stage. He comes as the most inform striker at the World Cup, having scored in his last 12 competitive fixtures for Norway. Martin Odegaard assisted Haaland’s first goal against Senegal and a corner for Ostigard’s strike against Iraq. He will be key to Norway’s creative intelligence against a defence of France’s quality.

France

No confirmed injury concerns from the Iraq match but they will miss their head coach Deschamps who travelled to attend the funeral of his mother.

Key players: Kylian Mbappe is already chasing immortality as he is just two goals behind Messi’s all-time record of 18 goals and is unlikely to be rested for this one. Michael Olise and Desire Doue add depth and finishing quality from wide positions. William Saliba and Ibrahima Konaté form France’s most reliable defensive partnership at this level, and will face the most testing individual examination of the tournament in trying to contain Haaland.
