Competition – FIFA World Cup 2026
Group A, Matchday 3: Thursday, June 25, 2026
Kick-off: 4 am (morning)
Venue – Estadio Monterrey, Guadalupe – México
Why South Africa vs South Korea match matter
The Estadio BBVA in Guadalupe, Monterrey, hosts what is effectively a knockout match even though it sits in the group stage. This is the most consequential 90 minutes in Bafana Bafana’s history outside of the 2010 World Cup they hosted at home. South Africa has performed dismally and sit bottom of Group A with only one point from their 1-1 draw against Czechia Republic. They are level with Czechia who had scored first in the 6th minute before Teboho Mokoena snatched a point to keep South Africa’s faint hopes alive in the 83rd minute.
Czechia are third with a point just like Bafana Bafana but is ahead on goal difference, meaning that the South Africans have no other option than to win this match.
South Africa reached this tournament for the first time since the home edition in 2010. They overcame significant obstacles, including Teboho Mokoena’s erroneous fielding during qualifying that briefly threatened to cost them their place, and Hugo Broos’ side will not want to exit without giving everything.
South Korea sit second in Group A with three points and needs to avoid a defeat regardless of what happens in the simultaneous Czechia vs Mexico fixture. On paper, they can afford to be cautious — to hold a defensive shape, absorb South Africa’s pressure, and pick their moments to attack on the counter with the most dangerous fast-break threats in this group. Yet South Korea have their own reasons to push for victory.
Their inspirational skipper Son Heung-min has raked in 56 goals for Korea and is only two short of the nation’s record of 58, currently held by Cha Bum-kun. This adds more flavour and reason why they should go for goals. A goal in Monterrey would take him to 57 and cement his legacy even further. This is, in all likelihood, his last World Cup, and the motivation to deliver a defining moment is immense.

The asymmetry of need is what makes this fixture so compelling from a tactical and betting perspective. South Africa must attack and will inevitably leave space behind.
South Korea have the quality and the counter-attacking firepower to punish that exposure repeatedly like Mexico and Czechia did. To make matters worse, Hugo Broos’ squad is leaner as he will miss their two most important creative players, Teboho Mokoena and Themba Zwane, through suspensions. This is a match where the football story, the individual sub-plots, and the betting angles all point powerfully in the same direction.

Key trends from South Korea’s recent matches
South Korea came from that disheartening defeat to Mexico, but it could be largely attributed to the raucous home fans and the atmosphere. They beat Czechia 2-1 courtesy of a late goal and have won three of their last four matches overall.
South Africa team news
South Africa faces a double suspension blow in this match as their midfield engine, Teboho Mokoena, has received a second yellow card in their draw against Czechia for a second bookable offence.
They will also miss Themba Zwane, who was slapped with an additional three-match ban following his controversial straight red card in the Mexico opener. The ban was extended from one to three games after the FIFA Disciplinary Committee ruled the arm incident constituted violent conduct, but the team has appealed and could get a reply before kickoff.
However, they will be boosted by the return of Sphephelo Sithole after completing his one-match ban for the red card he received in their 2-0 loss to Mexico and he should be available for selection.
South Korea team news
Kim Tae-Hyeon and Bae Jun-ho both trained through minor fitness concerns from the Czechia game and are expected to be available.
Key South African players to watch
South Africa’s most dangerous creative threat from wide areas. His directness, pace and willingness to take on defenders have caused problems for both Mexico and Czechia. Will likely be the primary source of South Africa’s attacking play in the absence of Mokoena and Zwane, and his ability to win free-kicks and corner positions could be key if Bafana are to find a way through South Korea’s defensive block.
Relebohile Mofokeng’s energy, close control and forward runs in behind the Czech midfield transformed the game. Broos is expected to hand him his first World Cup start, and Mofokeng replacing the suspended Zwane in the attacking line is potentially South Africa’s most significant selection call.
Key players for South Korea
South Korea’s captain and talisman Son Heung-min, is chasing a new record as his 56 international goals for his country are just two shy of the all-time Korean record of 58. Son has managed to net at every World Cup since 2014 and should be a good bet for a goal or two here as he chases what could be his final dance at the global stage.
