Why Spain vs Belgium match matter

Mikel Merino’s stoppage-time header pushed Spain one more level to the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals and, with it, brought down the World Cup career of one of the finest footballers to ever live, Cristiano Ronaldo.

It is also the first time that Spain has reached this level after going all the way to win it on African soil at the South Africa 2010 edition. Since then, Spain was dumped out of the group stages in Brazil 2014, then ousted by hosts Russia and Morocco on penalties in the 2018 and Qatar 2022 editions, respectively. This time they arrived at the tournament as the outright favourites to win their second title and have lived up to that billing throughout. Spain is building their shape with a possession-based approach that creates rhythm as they patiently build towards the opponent’s box.

Their defensive structure has been resolute, and they remain the only team from those that reached the previous round not to have conceded a goal. Their goalkeeper Unai Simón has set a new tournament record, going 609 minutes without conceding a goal since their 2-1 victory over Japan in December 2022.

Spain arrived on a bumpy start, being held to a goalless draw against tournament debutants Cabo Verde, but got back on their feet to brush off Saudi Arabia and Uruguay to win their group. The Spanish stepped on the pedal with Mikel Oyarzabal bagging a brace as they comfortably cruised past Austria to set up a Round of 16 clash with Portugal, which they cracked in the 91st minute.

Belgium’s bench power in display

Belgium bring a contrasting style as they come with an explosive direct play that is designed to disrupt exactly what Spain offers. But their main strength lies in a bench power that has contributed five goals with veteran striker Romelu Lukaku in the thick of things. Lukaku, 33, has scored three and assisted once, coming on as a substitute for Belgium, including the 93rd-minute strike in the 4-1 win over the USA.

But unlike Spain, Belgium are a team that has thrived on unpredictability and chaos to reach this stage. A late own goal grabbed them a point against Egypt in the opener and then held to a goalless draw by Iran before rebooting to a 5-1 victory over New Zealand with Leandro Trossard bagging a double and Lukaku’s first from the bench.

Luck again struck for the Belgians as a Lukaku and Youri Tielemans late goals from the 86-89th minutes sent their fixture with Senegal to extra time before the latter sealed victory with a stoppage time penalty. Their game against USA was dominated by political undertones as FIFA did the unthinkable to overturn Folarin Balogun’s red card and allow him to feature for USA. However, Belgium put that chaos behind them and produced their best show at the tournament to eliminate the co-host.

Spain team news

Spain has no major injury concerns but coach Luis de La Fuente may need to assess the match fitness of wonderkid Lamine Yamal after a quieter show against Portugal on Monday night. The coach will decide whether to put him against a more physical Belgium side or draw him from the bench.

Key Spanish players to watch

Unai Simon has kept five clean sheets at this World Cup, setting a new tournament record and will be called to action against a Belgian side that has scored 13 goals so far. Mikel Merino was their round of 16 hero, coming off the bench to head in the winner in the 91st minute and could come as a back-up strategy against the Belgians, who are hard to break.

Mikel Oyarzabal is Spain’s main striker despite failing to penetrate the Portuguese defence. The Real Sociedad striker has scored four goals so far and will be key, especially if Belgium keeper Thibaut Courtois spills the ball his way.

Belgium team news

Belgium coach Rudi Garcia has done a good job managing Romelu Lukaku so far, bringing him from the bench. The striker had an injury-laden season at Napoli but should play a key role, especially after contributing four goals off the bench.

Key Belgium players to watch

Kevin de Bruyne is the heart of Belgium’s creative engine and could push himself further in what could be his last World Cup. 25-year old Charles De Ketelaere grabbed a brace against the USA and is in good confidence ahead of this fixture. Lukaku’s minutes have been limited but not his goals basket after scoring three and contributing one in Belgium’s five games. He is expected to trouble the Spanish defence inside the box as they advance into the final third.

Predicted starting lineups for Spain vs Belgium
