Match details
Competition – FIFA World Cup 2026
Group H, Matchday 2: Sunday, June 21, 2026
Time – 7 pm

European champions Spain was held by Cape Verde in one of the early underdog shocks of the opening rounds. While that happened, Saudi Arabia, who started by shocking Argentina in Qatar, continued their beautiful stories, holding Uruguay 1-1. Those two results have left all Group H teams level on one point each, with the pool wide open in Atlanta, but Spain’s sick bay is receiving more injuries.

Why the Spain vs Saudi Arabia match matters
Spain were odds-on favourites to win their second World title, but the goalless result on opening day has poked holes into their set-up, especially when they face highly-organised sides better than Cape Verde. Luis de la Fuente’s side dominated every measurable statistic, controlling possession and territory throughout, but could not find a way past a Cabo Verdean defence inspired by 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha. Lamine Yamal, still managing fitness concerns after a long injury layoff, did not start and only entered in the 71st minute, by which time the pattern of frustration was already well established. Atlanta now offers Spain the chance to provide the response their global standing demands, with Yamal expected to make his first World Cup start.
Saudi Arabia, by contrast, leaves their opener with genuine credit and a result that exceeded most external expectations. Marcelo Bielsa’s side took a first-half lead through Abdulelah Al Amri’s alert finish from a rebound, and goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais produced a string of outstanding saves, including a stoppage-time stop to deny Federico Valverde, to keep Uruguay at arm’s length for long stretches. Maxi Araújo’s 80th-minute equaliser denied the Saudis what would have been an extraordinary victory, but the performance, and Al Owais’s nine saves across the match, confirmed this is a more resilient and better-organised Saudi side than the one eliminated in the group stage of the last two World Cups. A result of any kind against Spain in Atlanta would put Saudi Arabia in a commanding position to reach the knockout rounds for the first time since 1994.
Spain team news
Spain’s injury list keeps bulging with Aymeric Laporte, Alex Baena, Dani Olmo, Dean Huijsen, Marcos Llorente and Mikel Oyarzabal are a doubt for this fixture giving La Fuente some selection headache to fill the gaps.
Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, having returned to full training before the tournament, are expected to start after appearing only as substitutes against Cabo Verde.
Key players: Yamal is Spain’s most explosive attacking talent and is expected to make his full World Cup debut. He came off the bench against Cape Verde and was impressive, completing more dribbles than any other player on the pitch despite the limited time. Rodri remains the structural foundation of everything Spain does in possession, while Pedri is expected to provide more in the transitions in the midfield.

Saudi Arabia team news
Saudi Arabia has a clean bill of health and will once again turn to their keeper, Mohammed Al Owais, to replicate what his Cape Verde counterpart Vovinho did to stop Spain in the first game. Owais himself rightly received flowers after an outstanding performance that saw him pull nine saves against Uruguay to claim the player-of-the-match award.

Key trends in recent Spain matches
The 0-0 draw against Cape Verde will go into history books as one of the shockers of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. While that result seems a big surprise, recent Spain matches tell otherwise. Before the World Cup, Spain had drawn three of the five build-up international friendly matches, including against Iraq and Egypt. However, they have gone 11 matches unbeaten with seven wins. They have struggled to score only seven goals in the last five games but have been tough at the back, conceding only three goals. Their matches point to a team that is hard to score against.

Saudi Arabia’s 1-1 draw against Uruguay followed a goalless draw with Senegal in their last preparation friendly match a fortnight ago. They have struggled in the run to the World Cup, losing four, drawing two and winning only one of their last seven fixtures. They have managed to score at least a goal in four of their last five matches and have been mean at the back, conceding only five, including two clean sheets.
