Kick-off – 3 am
Venue – Guadalajara Stadium, Mexico
Why Uruguay vs Spain match matters
Estadio Akron in Guadalajara hosts what is comfortably the biggest game of the group stage in terms of football pedigree. It is the only Group H match that will be played outside the United States in a fixture that pits two of the sport’s most storied nations. Since 1930, when they became football’s first World Cup champions, Uruguay have added only one more world title and spent much of the modern era outside the game’s true elite. Yet their history still commands respect but against Spain, Uruguay are at a standpoint as they seek a result that could, for the least, earn them a third-place.
Spain is also not safe despite leading the table with four points from a draw against Cap Verde and a 4-0 over Saudi Arabia. If they lose to Uruguay and Cape Verde overcomes Saudi Arabia, they drop to third. This means that this group is very open and what makes it even more dramatic is that both matches will be played simuatenously.
They have the enormous luxury of knowing they can play conservatively, absorb Uruguay’s pressure, and counter through Lamine Yamal and Mikel Oyarzabal at devastating pace. The reigning European champions’ two group games have been a study in contrasts: a goalless draw with Cape Verde on Matchday 1, a result that surprised and alarmed in equal measure, followed by a clinical 4-0 demolition of Saudi Arabia on Matchday 2. The real Spain turned up against Saudi Arabia, and they have no intention of underperforming again on this stage.
Uruguay need at minimum a draw to be safe, though even a draw may not be enough if Cape Verde beat Saudi Arabia simultaneously. Marcelo Bielsa’s side have the quality but that was not evident in their opening group games as they had to dig deep in the 80th minute for Javier Araujo to grab them an equalizer and a point. Then came from a goal down to take a 2-1 first-half lead but fumbled and shared spoils. A side of Uruguay’s talent and history should not be drawing with Cape Verde. Now they must beat the most technically gifted team in the group to guarantee their progress.
Whether Luis de la Fuente can replace Pedri, who is suspended, will likely with Fabián Ruiz will be one of the most compelling tactical questions of the group stage.

Spain team news
Pedri, Spain’s creative heartbeat, is suspended after collecting his second yellow card of the tournament against Saudi Arabia. The Barcelona midfielder has been the connective tissue of Spain’s entire playing style, controlling tempo, dictating build-up, linking defence to attack and his absence hands Uruguay a chance they would not have had with him on the pitch.
Key Spanish players to watch
Lamine Yamal, 18 years old, Barcelona’s generational talent, is the most exciting player at this World Cup.

Key trends from Spain’s recent matches
Going by the quality of the Spanish squad, one would expect them to have qualified easily after two games in an expanded World Cup with a gulf in class but they’re taking the game into the last match. Spain failed to break a resilient Cape Verde in the opening game that they were forced to share spoils in a 0-0 draw. They rediscovered their lethal form to thrash Saudi Arabia 4-0 in a match that could have seen a bigger margin than that. Spain is among the four teams that are yet to concede a goal and have let only two in their last five scoring eight. Three of their last five have ended in draws.
